Group Facilitation Methods Refresher (GFMR)
Download course overview (pdf)
Who this course is for
Group Facilitation Methods is a pre-requisite for this course. The course is suitable for all those who would benefit from a refresher and further practice and support in their use of the basic Focused Conversation and Consensus Workshop methods – both those who have lacked the opportunity or confidence to practice them enough since their initial training, and those looking for support to take their understanding and use of the methods to the next stage.
This course is useful for team leaders and project managers within organisations, those working collaboratively with partners and external stakeholders, youth and community workers and independent facilitators.
"The challenge of demonstrating my facilitation skills under the watchful but supportive eye of my group has greatly boosted my confidence when I have had to do it for real" - Chris Browne, Regional Co-ordinator Social Cohesion, Government Office East Midlands
Questions this course answers
“How can I gain further experience and confidence to feel ready to use the two basic ToP methods for real, given the challenges and pressures I face in my own situation? How can I adapt the methods to suit the groups that I work with? How can I further develop my expertise with these methods, with support from a practicing facilitator with more experience of the ToP approach?”
This course provides an opportunity for Group Facilitation Methods course graduates to refresh and advance their understanding of the basic Focused Conversation and Consensus Workshop methods, and to benefit from supported practice in a safe learning environment with guided refection and feedback from an experienced facilitator.
What you will gain
By the end of the course, you will have
- increased your understanding of how and why the basic Focused Conversation and Consensus Workshop methods work, and your skill in using them
- identified opportunities and gained confidence to use the methods effectively, in “text-book” form or adapted, in your own real-world situations
- further developed your links with others to promote future collaboration and support in the use of the methods
Learning style
Participants will be able to learn from each others’ and the trainer’s experience of using the methods, and barriers to using them, in their own real-life situations; from their own supported preparation and practice in using the methods on the day; and from facilitated reflection and feedback from both peers and trainers. Every participant will have an opportunity to practice.
